Quiet Riot Line Up Sheet

With the passing of Frankie Banali, I've decided to post my line ups sheet on Quiet Riot. 

When it comes to Quiet Riot's line ups, there are a slew of them. There's probably a few missing here. In the Quiet Riot documentary Well Now You're Here There's No Way Back, there is a fairly amusing scene in which Frankie gives the complete line up history of Quiet Riot. That scene is the basis for most of this sheet, although I don't think Frankie mentioned every line up.  So along with that, I've also based this off years of research, Behind the Music and Wikipedia. So here's my best attempt at making a line up sheet for these guys. 

Quiet Riot I (1975-1978)

 Notes: Quiet Riot is originally formed by Randy Rhoads and Kelly Garni. The two met in school during 9^th grade. The two became friends and formed what would become Quiet Riot, recruiting singer Kevin DuBrow and drummer Drew Forsyth. The band get a record deal with CBS Records in Japan- which is where the first two Quiet Riot albums are released. The line up ends after Kelly is fired for allegedly firing a gun during one rehearsal.

 

Quiet Riot II (1978-1979)

Notes: Bassist Rudy Sarzo replaces original bassist Kelly Garni. During this time, the band’s second album was released- with Rudy on the cover, despite not playing on it. The band tried desperately to get a record deal in the US but sooner or later, Randy decided to leave the band after getting the job to join Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band.

 

Quiet Riot III (1979-1980)

Note: The band supposedly continued without Randy for a little longer. By 1980, Quiet Riot were done. 

Band split (1980-1982)

Kevin DuBrow continues as DuBrow with a revolving door of musicians. Randy joins Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band in 1980, appearing on Ozzy’s first two albums- Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman. When Ozzy is looking to replace his bassist and drummer, Randy suggests former band mate Rudy Sarzo- who ends up getting the job.

Notes: The band goes back to using the Quiet Riot name. According to Rudy Sarzo’s autobiography, Randy had given Kevin his blessing prior to Randy’s death.

On March 19, 1982- Randy Rhoads dies in a jet plane accident during a pit stop on the tour in support of Diary of a Madman. Despite Randy’s death, the tour resumes shortly afterwards- with future Night Ranger guitarist Brad Gillis filling in for Randy.

Notes: Out of the ashes of DuBrow, a new version of Quiet Riot is formed. Kevin had become friends with drummer Frankie Banali sometime in the early 1980s. Banali would end up joining the DuBrow band in 1980. Guitarist Carlos Cavazo, originally from a band called Snow, joined two years later. This line up are signed to Pasha Records in 1982 and begin recording Metal Health. The title track and “Don’t Want to Let You Go” are completed before Wright leaves the group. 

Quiet Riot V (1983-1985)

Notes: After fulfilling the tour with Ozzy Osbourne, Rudy Sarzo decided to rejoin Quiet Riot. From what has been written, Rudy felt comfortable in rejoining the group after being on tour when Randy died. With Rudy back in the band, the classic lineup is set in place. Metal Health is released in March 1983. By the end of the year, the album goes to #1 in the Billboard charts- becoming the first metal album of its kind to do so. The album’s success led to their peers getting signed to major record labels. Hit singles also come out of the title track and a cover of Slade’s “Cum On Feel the Noize.” The follow up, Condition Critical, sells fairly well. Critically, it’s panned by critics. People are especially critical of the band’s decision to cover another Slade hit “Mama Weer All Crazee Now.” Despite this, the band are able to tour. The line up ends after Rudy leaves the band.  

Quiet Riot IVa (1985-1986)

QR III (1986) 

Notes: Chuck Wright returns to the group in 1985. The following year, the band releases QRIII. Unlike the two albums before it, QRIII is not a big seller and the tour in support of the album is met with similar results. During this time, there are tensions within the band- specifically between Kevin and Frankie. After the tour, Kevin is fired from his own band while Chuck leaves again.

Quiet Riot VI (1986-1987)

Note: Frankie and Carlos decide to continue despite not having anymore original members. Future Rough Cutt singer Paul Shortino is hired as Kevin’s replacement. Rudy also returns to the band briefly before joining Whitesnake.

Quiet Riot VII (1987-1989)

QR (1988)

Notes: Bassist Sean McNabb replaces Rudy Sarzo. With this line up, QR is released. The album tanks in the charts and after a short tour, the band splits. Frankie joins W.A.S.P. shortly afterwards, just in time for the recording of the band’s next album The Headless Children.

 Band split (1989-1991)

 Kevin DuBrow re-emerges as a radio DJ during the early 1990s. It’s also around this time that he is in a band called Heat with Quiet Riot bandmate Carlos Cavazo. The band ends up changing their name to Quiet Riot but it isn’t until a little later when Frankie Banali rejoins, renewing his friendship with Kevin.

Notes: Chuck Wright is replaced by Bjorn Englen for the Down to the Bone tour. Other sources claim that Bjorn was in the band from 1994 to 1995 prior to DTTB’s recording- playing a total of 22 shows with the band. He is fired shortly afterwards.

 Notes: The classic line-up reunites after Marilyn Manson invites the band to perform for one of his private after-shows. Around 1999 or 2000, Kevin is unable to make it to several gigs. For those shows, Paul Shortino filled in for him. This line ups end in 2003 when it’s determined that the band can no longer go on financially.

Notes: Just a year after their split, Quiet Riot reunited- with Kevin, Frankie, Chuck and Beautiful Creatures guitarist Alex Grossi in the band. From memory, I personally emailed Frankie around 2006- asking what happened to Alex and Chuck. According to him, Alex and Chuck left given their contracts had them in the band until the end of 2005. However, other sources claim that only Alex left.

Note: In late 2005, it’s announced that from LA Guns guitarist Tracci Guns has joined Quiet Riot. This only last for one month. While his contract supposedly ended the year prior, Chuck Wright might’ve been in the band during this time.

Notes: Throughout 2006, Kevin and Frankie have a revolving door of musicians coming in and out for various gigs. Given the sporadic nature of the band at this point, I’ve put all of the members that were around during this time- including a returning Sean McNabb. After Rehab is released, Alex and Chuck were able to rejoin the band.

Notes: On November 25, 2007, Kevin DuBrow was found dead in his house after missing for several days after Thanksgiving of that year. The coroner’s report suggests that DuBrow might have died days prior to the date he was found- although Frank Banali maintained that November 25, 2007 is the day that Kevin died. Weeks later, it was revealed that DuBrow had died from a cocaine overdose. In early 2008, Frankie Banali stated that Quiet Riot were no more.

Note: Much to the surprise of many, Frankie decided to reform the band in 2010- along with announcing the production of a new documentary (Well Now You’re Here There’s No Way Back). The band hires singer Mark Huff, who was the singer in 5150- a tribute band to Sammy Hagar era Van Halen. As seen in the documentary, Huff often forgot the lyrics to songs such as “Cum on Feel the Noize.” In 2011, Huff is dismissed from Quiet Riot.

Quiet Riot XVII (2012)

Note: Frankie reaches out to Montrose singer Keith St. John to fill in for a few gigs in 2012 that Frankie couldn’t bail out on. While not vocally in the same range as the band’s previous singers, Banali stated in the Quiet Riot documentary that St. John tried his best.

Note: After receiving messages on Facebook from someone claiming he could do better than Mark Huff, singer Scott Vokun is auditioned on the day of Alex Grossi’s wedding. Scott is hired and stays with the band until 2013.

10 (2014)

Note: Former Love/Hate and Ratt singer Jizzy Pearl becomes the band’s next lead singer. He’s able to stick around for three years. This band releases 10, an album featuring six new studio tracks featuring Jizzy on vocals. On several of these songs, Rudy Sarzo and Tony Franklin make guest appearances. The last four or five songs are live tracks from 2007, being some of the last recorded performances of Kevin DuBrow.

Note: Adler’s Appetite singer Seann Nicols is selected to be the band’s next singer. However after only several shows with the band, Nicols is dismissed as Banali’s first choice- American Idol Season 10 alum James Durbin- was now able to join Quiet Riot. Prior to this, Nicols had recorded a new album with the band. He later joins Bobby Blotzer’s version of Ratt.

Note: With James Durbin in the band, the release date of Quiet Riot’s new album Road Rage is postponed given that it features Seann Nicols on vocals. The band headed back to the studio to re-record the entire album with Durbin on lead vocals. The album is finally released in the summer of 2017. As fate would have it, the same thing happens again in September 2019 when James Durbin announces his departure from the band.

Quiet Riot XIXa (2019-2020)

Note: Although Jizzy rejoins Quiet Riot, Hollywood Cowboys remains unchanged- with Durbin still on lead vocals. It is released in November 2019. Frankie Banali is diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in April 2019 but did not publicly reveal this in October 2019. For the next few months, Frankie goes through 25 rounds of chemo. Sadly, Frankie Banali passes away on August 20, 2020.

Note: As of this writing, the future of Quiet Riot is TBD/TBA. From what Frankie has said prior to his passing, he claimed that he was banking in on a lot of material. With that, it's possible that there might be some posthumous releases coming out in the future.
